CBS Replication games – call for participants

1 October 2025

Replication initiatives and stricter transparency policies are increasingly common across leading journals in the social sciences. ODISSEI and the Institute for Replication are launching the CBS Replication Games to contribute to open and transparent science. Researchers from multiple disciplines are invited to participate in this event.

During the CBS replication Games, teams of researchers will attempt to reproduce and test the robustness of findings from six economics papers published since 2020 in top economic journals. Each of these studies is based entirely on CBS microdata, supplemented with public-use datasets, and accompanied by openly available code.

Selected participants will receive one month of access to a unified CBS Microdata project containing all the data necessary to reproduce one of the six papers listed below. After the CBS Replication Games, each team will complete a reproducibility/robustness report on one paper.

The six papers that will be replicated during the games:

Practicalities and requirements:

  • The CBS Replication Games will take place in person, in Utrecht, the Netherlands, mid-February 2026 (dates to be confirmed)
  • While the Replication Games themselves will take three days, we estimate that the workload will be higher and will require considerable work on the data both before and after the Replication Games.
  • The event is open to all interested researchers, regardless of their seniority level.
  • Prior experience working with CBS microdata is valued, but it’s not a prerequisite

The deadline to register is 30 November 2025. The admission decision will be announced shortly after.

Please note that we cannot guarantee that all interested researchers will be admitted to the project. ODISSEI and the Institute for Replication will cover the cost of access to the data for the selected researchers, but the accommodation or travel costs cannot be reimbursed. The researchers will be supported by the ODISSEI SoDa team and Research Software Engineers from the eScience Center.
