Creating life course datasets from historical population sources: the case of Suriname 1830-1950

Rick Mourits (Radboud University)

The life course approach to study sociological and demographic phenomena has often been limited to contemporary and/or western populations. Our ambition is to extend this approach to non -western and historical populations, but this puts high demands on data gathering. The presentation will discuss the particular challenges for the creation of life course datasets posed by the historical sources on the population of Suriname. How to link individuals across slave listings, emancipation registers and civil records of birth, marriage and death? Specifically, we will go into the record linkage techniques developed within the project.
