From 19 to 30 June, ODISSEI is hosting its second summer school at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, as part of the Summer Institutes in Computational Social Science (SICSS) and the Erasmus Graduate School for Social Sciences and Humanities (EGSH). With the summer school, ODISSEI hopes to bring together PhD students, post-docs and early career social scientists and data scientists interested in computational social science using ODISSEI. Registration for this summer school will open in January 2023.
The first two-week SICSS-ODISSEI summer school was in June 2022. In the first week, the programme included lectures and interactive work sessions to familiarise participants with the ODISSEI Infrastructure and some of the opportunities and challenges in computational social sciences. In the second week, the participants executed a unique social science benchmarking challenge using large-scale, administrative data from Statistics Netherlands, gaining hands-on experience and putting their new knowledge into practice.
In the summer of 2023, ODISSEI will repeat the SICSS-ODISSEI summer school but with a new benchmarking challenge focused on the prediction of life outcomes using survey and administrative data. In the first week, participants will be introduced to the infrastructure and given courses in applied machine learning. In the second week, participants will form teams and compete in the benchmarking prediction competition. This includes access to the administrative data and training on how to work with this data securely. This makes ODISSEI the only SICSS site that focuses on the use of large scale administrative data within its curriculum.
ODISSEI is the Dutch digital infrastructure for Social Sciences. It has an active community of researchers that are currently working with and for ODISSEI facilities. ODISSEI hopes that these researchers will benefit from SICSS-ODISSEI, and SICSS participants will be welcomed into the existing community to allow them to connect and share their (research) ideas and problems. The course will be an accredited graduate school course by the Erasmus Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Humanities (https://www.egsh.eur.nl/) covering 5 ECTS.
