Gateways to Migrant Inclusion: Leadership Diversity and Migrant Labour-Market Outcomes in the Netherlands

21 January 2026

People with a migration background continue to face disadvantages in the Dutch labour market, including lower pay, less job stability, and fewer chances for promotion. This project examines whether diversity in organizational leadership—for example, having managers or board members with a migration background—can help reduce these inequalities. Using detailed, anonymized data that link employees to their employers, the study will analyze how this increase in leadership diversity relates to labor market gaps and job segregation of migrant workers. The results will provide new evidence on how decisions made at the top of organizations affect the careers of migrant workers. This research contributes to policies aimed at achieving fair and inclusive work opportunities for everyone in the Netherlands.
