There is not a single way of being and living as a transgender and gender diverse (TGD) person. A typical trajectory of transition for them in the Netherlands includes diagnoses, legal gender marker change and hormonal and surgical treatments. However, many TGD people may derive from this ‘standard’ trajectory for many reasons; some even abolish it because they cannot find their place therein. Their presence and characteristics are hard to estimate. How many of them are not captured by any administrative or survey data? How do their longitudinal life and transition trajectories look like? Who has the most mental care burden? Despite surveys and administrative data giving different rough estimates, most of the questions have not been answered before. This study tries to answer these questions by leveraging capture-recapture designs to estimate the incidence of TGD persons, and sequence analysis to characterize the temporal pattern of their transition life story.
